Technology Policies

Internet Use Policy:
Lakeland School Corporation provides filtered access to the Internet for all students.  Students will have access to Internet information resources through their classroom, media center, and/or school computer lab. This system has been established for educational purposes. Parents will receive information on the acceptable use policy and will sign to give their permission for student use during the registration process. Failure to abide by all of the terms of the agreement may lead to termination of the student's computer account and possible disciplinary action up to and including suspension from School or referral to law enforcement authorities. Online testing for state and district testing is exempt from this policy.

Acceptable Use Policy, Procedures, and Information (Policy 7540.03 and 7540.04)

The focus of the 1:1 Technology program in Lakeland School Corporation is to provide necessary tools and resources for a technology rich classroom environment that facilitates opportunities for flexibility, collaboration, communication, creativity and relevant learning.

At Lakeland, technology will be integrated into student learning through authentic projects and instructional activities on a daily basis. This access to technology empowers students and teachers to use technology like adults do in the real world, accessing and using purposeful technology-based tools anytime a task calls for them.

Learning in classrooms K-12 at Lakeland is a continuous dynamic interaction among students, educators, parents, and the extended community. Implementation of this 1:1 Technology initiative is designed to enable anywhere, anytime learning that is no longer limited by the four walls of the classroom or building. Purposeful technology integration liberates teachers from being deliverers of content and, instead, allows them to be facilitators of deep, individualized learning for all students. 

Wireless Communication Device Policy:
To support student learning and minimize distractions, our school follows Indiana law regarding student use of personal wireless communication devices during the school day. What the Law Says: Indiana’s Senate Enrolled Act (SEA) 78 requires schools to restrict student access to personal wireless communication devices during instructional time. Per statute, a “wireless communication device includes any personal device capable of connecting to a cellular network or the Internet. This includes personal cell phones, tablets, laptops, gaming devices, and smartwatches.
Our School Policy: “No Cell - Bell-to-Bell” (Policy 5136)
At Lakeland, students are not permitted to access or use personal wireless devices at any time during the school day, from the first bell (8:00am) to the final bell (3:05pm). This guidance does not apply to afterschool hours. Personal communication devices (PCDs) include computers, laptops, tablets, e-readers, cellular or mobile phones, smartphones, gaming devices, and/or other web-enabled devices of any type. Students are prohibited from using PCDs, including but not limited to those with cameras, in gymnasiums, locker rooms, shower facilities, restrooms/bathrooms, swimming pools, or any other school situation where personal privacy exists. 
This means:
Devices must be powered off.
Devices must be stored away in their locker.
Devices cannot be used between classes, during lunch, or in study hall.
We want every student to:
Stay focused and engaged in learning.
Reduce distractions and interruptions.
Improve academic performance and social interaction.
When devices may be used: There are a few limited exceptions allowed by law and school policy:
Instructional Use: When a teacher gives permission for a specific learning activity.
Medical Needs: For students with documented medical conditions. Proper documentation needs to be on file with the school.
Emergency Situations: As directed by school staff
Communication during the school day
If a parent/guardian needs to reach a student during the day:
Please contact the school office.
Messages will be delivered promptly.
Students may also request to use the office phone if needed.
Consequences for Misuse
Cell phone/headphone/device disruption based on school policies will result in the consequences listed in the chart below.  Failure to comply may result in confiscation of the device and further consequences consistent with the LSC Progressive Discipline Handbook. Students, who bring devices to school for after-school use, do so at their own risk.

Students who violate this policy may be directed to delete the audio and/or picture/video file. If the violation involves potentially illegal activity, the confiscated-PCD may be turned over to law enforcement.
